EMIRI Technology Roadmap – Where advanced materials can make the difference to achieve clean and sustainable Energy and Mobility
The EMIRI Technology Roadmap holds the key Research and Innovation priorities for advanced materials within seven distinctive fields of the clean and sustainable energy and mobility sectors.
The advanced materials demand for clean and sustainable energy and mobility will grow continuously until 2050 and beyond. There is a rapidly increasing request for better, safer, more affordable and environmentally friendly solutions. The industrial competition is fierce, not only from established world regions but also from new, strong challengers.
The EMIRI Technology roadmap pinpoints where further investments and supportive measures in research and innovation are needed to create and deploy new solutions and to transform global challenges into new opportunities for European businesses and societies. EMIRI believes that a sizeable, stable, long-term and multi-annual Innovation Pillar, relying upon a programmatic approach, and offering the industry a clear outlook on where and how EU is aligning its innovation priorities, is central in succeeding in enabling a prosperous, sustainable and climate-neutral EU economy by 2050. The industrial research and demonstration actions (TRL 4 to 7) proposed are exactly tailored to Horizon Europe’s pillar II “Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness”, which translates the technology assets to market needs with high risks but also high gains. Further on, to maintain critical new advanced material development, EMIRI also supports a strengthened focus on the development of advanced materials in the lower technology readiness level research programs in pillar I and pillar II. The EMIRI strategic R&I priorities for Horizon Europe - the upcoming European framework programme for Research and Innovation - are presented in the following linked document http://bit.ly/2MeeaMa, also available as attached document below.
Since 2012, EMIRI, the Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative, is representing more than 50 organisations (industry, research, associations) active in advanced materials for clean and sustainable energy & mobility technologies. EMIRI contributes to industrial leadership of developers, producers and key users of advanced materials by shaping innovation, manufacturing and energy policy framework at the European level.

EMIRI workshop on Advanced Materials at EU Industry Day 2018
The EMIRI workshop held during EU Industry Day was a success (docs at http://bit.ly/2CfL3Wf) ... in terms of coherence & strength of messages voiced by industrial speakers (Umicore, Solvay, Dow Chemical, AGC Glass, Arcelor Mittal) and all requesting EU Commission to pay much more attention to Advanced Materials in FP9.
Despite being the heart of all clean energy & clean mobility technologies and representing today 50% of all jobs in clean energy & clean mobility value chains, our innovation ecosystem received only 15% of Horizon 2020 funding to clean energy & clean mobility.
This should not continue in FP9 if we are serious about accelerating innovation in clean energy & clean mobility, developing industrial competitiveness, and creating economic opportunities for European citizens ... which is the Mission at the core of VP Maroš Šefčovič’s « Clean Energy Industrial Forum » focussing on batteries, renewable energy and construction.
Regarding batteries, industrial & innovation actors will present 20 priority actions in support of EU battery alliance (https://lnkd.in/gidnTMg) and it was a pleasure for EMIRI to contribute to actions on advanced Li-ion & solid-state batteries building upon our previous work and recommendations in Integrated SET Plan.

EMIRI at SET Plan Conference 2016 of Bratislava
During the SET (Strategic Energy Technologies) Plan Conference organized by EU Commission and Slovakia in Bratislava, EMIRI contributed with a poster on “Re-industrialization of EU & the Energy Union - The Contribution of Advanced Materials for Low Carbon Energy Technologies”.
The poster gives a quick overview on global trends in low carbon energy and their impact on EU-based Industry of Advanced Materials. The 3 strategic recommendations of EMIRI for further manufacturing of Advanced Materials in EU are also outlined and the EMERIT Industry-Driven Initiative is highlighted.
The poster is available here.
Re-Industrialization of EU - The Contribution of Advanced Materials for Low Carbon Energy Technologies
Global industry is changing faster than ever before. These changes are triggered by accelerating fusion of physical, digital and biological systems. We are already witnessing profound shifts across all industries in other world regions, marked by the emergence of new business models, the disruption of incumbents and the reshaping of production, consumption, transportation and delivery systems.
EU is at a crossroads - It will either catch up with other regions and embrace these changes, or spiral down, losing its industrial competitiveness, losing “earning power” to safeguard living standards, accumulating job losses and experiencing social instability.
Low carbon energy (LCE) technologies (energy performance in buildings, energy capture & storage, decarbonization) are developing fast and represent an important opportunity for EU-based industry of Advanced Materials. EMIRI (the Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative) estimates this EU-based industry today at 30 billion euro yearly revenues, over 500.000 direct & indirect jobs (close to 50% of total EU-based jobs in renewable energy) and close to 3 billion euro of yearly investment in R&D and capital expenditures.
Global trends are however impacting our industry of Advanced Materials for LCE technologies:
- Developing countries invest more than developed countries in the deployment of LCE technologies and appear as the key markets (China is global leader investing 2.5 times more than Europe in renewable energy with an installed capacity at 26% of world total)
- Manufacturing of devices and components used in LCE technologies is moving to growing markets leading to new industrial champions and European dependency on imported technologies (1st wind turbine & photovoltaic cell suppliers are Chinese)
- Europe is losing leadership in R&D investment and innovation eco-systems develop outside Europe (China and Europe spend each $2.8 billion but spending in Europe fell 8% compared to 2014 (government spending down 18%) while it rose 4% in China)
These trends strongly impact job creation in EU in LCE technologies. Losing ground, EU becomes a LCE technology importer, and represents less than 15% of jobs in the sector (1.17 million jobs in EU according to International Renewable Energy Association (IRENA)) while China accounts for 44% of total.
Based on historical strengths, our industry is strongly anchored in EU and serving global markets but to maintain leadership, develop manufacturing presence and innovation power in EU, we recommend that EU and Member States:
- Stimulate, in frame of Energy Union, a stronger growth of European market for LCE technologies … Otherwise the EU-based sector of Advanced Materials will not develop local manufacturing presence if growing markets are outside Europe
- Focus innovation support on fewer priorities in line with business realities so that industry can develop competitive innovation-driven products … Otherwise manufacturing could still happen in EU but based on innovation from elsewhere
- Create a business-friendly environment so that manufacturing in EU comes at a benefit … Otherwise the European markets could become steadily served from outside
If EU implements policies driving innovation, manufacturing and market development of LCE technologies, the EU-based industry of Advanced Materials can develop strong business positions. European society will benefit from presence of a competitive industry safeguarding investments, generating growth and employment, and creating strong innovation ecosystems. By 2025, annual revenues of the sector could reach past 40 billion euro, generating an additional 300.000 jobs (65.000 direct jobs including 3.000 in R&D) and leading to an additional cumulated investment of 15 billion euro.
Find out more in the presentation given at the “RE in EU” Conference of Bratislava organized in October 2016 by EU Commission and Slovakia in frame of Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU.
This presentation was also shared with the high-level guests of the IUMRS Global Leadership & Service Award Ceremony held at the European Parliament in November 2016.
Discover EMERIT - The Industry-Driven Initiative on Innovation in Advanced Materials for Low Carbon Energy Technologies
The industry of Advanced Materials for LCE (low carbon energy) technologies is strongly anchored in Europe and serving global markets. EMIRI (the Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative) conservatively estimates our Europe-based industry today at 30 billion euro yearly revenues, over 500.000 direct & indirect jobs (more jobs than any renewable energy value chain in EU and close to 50% of total EU-based jobs in renewable energy) and close to 3 billion euro of yearly investment in R&D and capital expenditures.
Global trends are however affecting the EU-based Industry of Advanced Materials for LCE and EU policies need to consider these. Maintaining leadership, developing manufacturing presence and innovation power in Europe requires among others to focus innovation support on fewer priorities in line with business realities so that industry can develop competitive innovation-driven products.
EMIRI calls for an Innovation Pillar based on collaboration between public and private, aligned with 10 actions of Integrated SET (Strategic Energy Technologies) Plan and industry orientations. Covering Advanced Materials for energy performance in buildings, for competitive renewable energy, for energy system integration and for decarbonization, the Innovation Pillar will bridge the gap between laboratory and market, reduce innovation risks and accelerate innovation to reach better and faster the market for LCE technologies.
Over 2015, EMIRI worked in close collaboration with European Commission Directorate General Research & Innovation to create the EMERIT Industry-Driven Initiative (EMERIT stands for “Energy Materials for Europe – Research & Industry innovating Together”) which lays the foundations & priorities of the Innovation Pillar. EMERIT rests upon 4 Key Components featuring max 20 Innovation Topics covering priorities supported by Industry & Research in field of LCE technologies.
