Last February, the European Commission launched the Communication Advanced Materials for Industrial Leadership. This initiative outlines a European strategy to ensure industrial leadership in advanced materials, aiming to establish a secure materials ecosystem in Europe that fosters leadership in research and fast-tracks innovations to market. To achieve this, the strategy commits to increasing public and private funding and investment in advanced materials R&D by exploring existing tools and developing innovative funding possibilities at the EU, national, and regional levels through a coordinated approach.
The Communication outlines 14 actions, including the launch of a new co-programmed public-private partnership, “Innovative Materials for EU,” under Horizon Europe; the development of the “materials commons” by mid-2025—a European digital infrastructure for advanced materials aimed at accelerating research and innovation processes; the launch of an Advanced Materials Academy; and the establishment of a Technology Council on Advanced Materials.
How crucial is R&I to advancing the roll-out of innovative materials in the EU? What opportunities will the various EU public funding instruments offer industry and other R&I stakeholders? This GIURI Open event will explore these and other aspects of the European Advanced Materials Strategy through a dialogue with key policymakers responsible for the initiative’s implementation.
